The Associated Press has reported that in a stunning upset propelled by the Tea Party, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) was defeated in the?congressional primary on Tuesday. Tea Party insurgent and economics professor David Brat delivered a?devastating loss to Cantor, who is the second most powerful Republican in the House of Representatives. This completely dashes Cantor’s hopes for a future speaker-ship in the House.

From the Dallas Morning News:

Brat had been a thorn in Cantor’s side on the campaign, casting the congressman as a Washington insider who isn’t conservative enough. Last month, a feisty crowd of Brat supporters booed Cantor in front of his family at a local party convention.

We don’t like Cantor, certainly, and we won’t miss him. It gave me a momentary leap of joy to see him lose. Perhaps even scarier, however, is the idea of his Tea Party challenger winning his seat in the House.

As an update, Liberal Americans on the Liberal America Facebook page are pointing out that Virginia has open primaries and many Democrats likely crossed to help a weak candidate so that we could more likely guarantee a Democratic victory in the general election.

AP called the race?shortly after 8 p.m.?EST. Stay tuned. We will post a video when we have one. Let us know your thoughts at the Liberal America Facebook page.
