Exploring Religion- Pastafarianism. Yes, It’s Really A Thing.

Pastafarianism

Pastafarianism is a religion founded by Bobby Henderson in January 2005, in response to the Kansas School Board considering teaching intelligent design in their classrooms. This religion became mainstream after Mr. Henderson sent a letter to the school board concerning their view on intelligent design, pointing out that he held the belief that a flying spaghetti monster had created the universe.

He received no response, so, he posted the letter online and it piqued public curiosity, in May 2005. Thus, this new movement was born.

Ever since that moment, the movement has grown to include millions, if not thousands?of followers around the world.

What is Pastafarianism?

Pastafarianism?is the belief that a giant floating blob of spaghetti called the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM for short) created the universe and everything in it. Since the “foundation” of this religion in 2005, a lot of followers of the FSM have taken letters that Bobby Henderson wrote and has compiled a religious text out of these letters.

It is called The Flying Spaghetti Monster Gospel and it is available at Barnes and Noble, Amazon, and other places that books are sold.

(I’m seriously going to get one, readers. I think it’d be interesting to study about!)

They have their own beliefs, prayers, social justice battles, holidays, and even divine people in their religion.

Beliefs.

So, what do these Pastafarianists believe? Here are some key points.

  • Their faith lies in the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
  • The Flying Spaghetti Monster created the world as it is today.
  • Scientists have data to otherwise because the FSM manipulates the data they collect and the experiments they perform with his long noodly arms.
  • Pirates are divine. They were not the swash buckling kind like Jack Sparrow, but peace loving, candy giving people who were very possibly the first Pastafarians.
  • Full pirate regalia is the mode of dress when entering houses of worship.
  • Happy Holidays is what the Pastafarians celebrate around Christmas, Hannukah, and Kwanza.
  • There are no strict rules and they have a very easy going attitude.

Prayers, Rituals, Standards?

There are no set prayers, rituals, or standards in Pastafarianism. International “Talk Like A Pirate Day” is celebrated and it is strongly encouraged for all Pastafarians to celebrate it.

When they do pray, however, they say, “R’amen,” after each prayer.

Holidays.

  • Happy Holidays
  • Ramendan
  • Pastover

Social Justice.

The Pastafarians are avid social justice components, urging freedom for other religions and supporting gay marriage.
