Rick Perry Suggests Joan Rivers May Not Have Died Under Texas Abortion Laws

Dang, Joan Rivers! You should have sought medical care in Texas, where stringent abortion laws may have saved your life. Yeah, yeah, I know you were 81 years old, and I know you’re past the child-bearing age, and I know you weren’t even getting an abortion, but since when do all of these little details even matter? In the world (and mind) of Texas Gov. Rick Perry, it’s all the same, you know? Women are going to die anyhow, and where better to do that than Texas!

But Perry has suggested that the iconic comedian would have likely?survived the routine medical procedure that killed her IF ONLY?the New York outpatient clinic where she died had been subjected to the same standards required by Texas’ insane new abortion laws. The bill that Perry signed into law last year requires that abortions be performed in ambulatory surgical centers.

There’s a fatal flaw in this reasoning, however. (Isn’t there always when Rick Perry’s involved?) Poor Joan may not have been able to actually FIND a clinic in time. Texas law?has?led to the closure of nearly half of?the clinics that were previously able to perform abortions.

And well, there is another fatal flaw in Rick Perry’s logic — the clinic where Joan Rivers was treated has been described as an ambulatory surgical center. So…..?

From The Guardian:

?It was interesting that when Joan Rivers, and the procedure that she had done, where she died ? that was a clinic. And I’m just ? it’s a curious thought that if they had had that type of regulations in place, whether or not that individual would be still alive,? Perry said on Sunday in response to a question from an audience member during a keynote session at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin.

Joan Rivers went into cardiac arrest as her personal physician began to perform a biopsy on Rivers? vocal cords.?Because she was suffering from a sore throat and hoarse voice, Rivers was at the clinic for an endoscopy to be performed by another doctor, gastroenterologist Dr. Lawrence Cohen, who also served as the clinic’s medical director.
