Unfortunately by now, we are used to hearing politicians spew the same old talking points on important matters such as immigration. Republican presidential hopeful Ted Cruz is obviously no exception. What was surprising, though, was to see Fox’s own Megyn Kelly hold Cruz’s feet to the fire after she asked him a seemingly simple question regarding immigration.
On Megyn Kelly’s show, “The Kelly File,” Tuesday night, Megyn asked Cruz this simple question:
“If you had a husband and a wife who are illegal immigrants, and they have two children who are here who are American citizens, would you deport all of them? Would you deport the American citizen children?”
To this question, Cruz began to explain his “stage manner” approach to immigration. From “securing the border and stopping illegal immigration,” and to “improve and streamline legal immigration.” As Cruz began to run through his obviously over-rehearsed answers towards anything regarding immigration, Megyn stopped him cold and basically called him out by saying:
“But that doesn’t sound like an answer. Mr. Trump answered that question explicitly last night on ‘The O’Reilly Factor’ will you do so now?”
Even with Kelly’s obvious call out, Cruz continued to spew the same talking points and rhetoric that so many Republicans have come to rely on these days by saying:
“Triple the border patrol, increase four-fold the fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft to monitor the border, put in place a strong biometric exidentiary system because 40% of illegal immigration doesn’t come across the border it’s visa overstays, put in place a strong E-Verify system, and then this final piece is critical, actually have the federal government enforce the law.”
It’s at this point Kelly tried once more to get a simple answer from Cruz. She told Cruz:
“But listen, but Senator I understand all that, and you’ve outlined your plan, but unlike you — you’re dodging my question. You don’t want to answer that question. He says he would. To Donald Trump he says they’re all gone under his policy. What would a President Cruz do? Do the American citizen children of two illegal immigrants who are born here, the children, do they get deported under a President Cruz?”
After being asked this simple question again, Cruz seems to lose his cool with Kelly by saying:
“Megyn, I get that that’s the question you want to ask. That’s also the question every mainstream media liberal journalist wants to ask. They focus exclusively on the 12-million people. It is a distraction from how we actually solve the problem. You know, it’s also the question Barack Obama wants to focus on.”
To this Kelly said:
“But why is it so hard? Why don’t you just say yes or no?”
Despite Megyn Kelly’s best efforts and a few tense moments, she still could not get a straight answer from Cruz. While I do not agree with most of Donald Trump’s social philosophies, with candidates like Cruz, it is no wonder Trump is leading in the polls. For better or for worse, at least you know where Trump stands.
