Earlier this week, President Obama made history once again. This time it was with the nomination of Eric Fanning to be Secretary of the Army. Fanning is eminently qualified for the job, and he also happens to be gay, so his nomination would make him first openly gay Secretary of the Army and the first to ever lead any branch of the U.S. military.

Historic and long overdue, right? Well, that’s how many of us see it, but there are lots of right wing haters who think this means the U.S. military is going to hell in a handbasket, and they took to social media so they could fully vent their noxious blend of hatred and ignorance about the new Army Chief:

You would think in this era of equality for all and the end of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in the military ranks that we could accept Fanning for his qualifications and be happy for him and our country as we prove yet again that we have evolved into a truly tolerant nation.

But unfortunately there are still those among us who prefer to hurl invectives at anyone who is different. And that should make us redouble our efforts to not rest until we achieve full equality and acceptance.
