You have to wonder why Chris Christie continues to accompany Donald Trump everywhere he goes, as if he’s some kind of loyal lap dog. What has Trump promised him for his feigned obedience? A spot on the Supreme Court? An offer to be Attorney General? Whatever it is, how could it possibly be worth the kind of abuse Trump heaps on the New Jersey Governor?
Yesterday, during a campaign stop on Ohio, Trump was taking a cheap shot at Ohio Governor John Kasich, but he also happened to slag Christie in the process:
“Your governor, Kasich, if you look at him, and I’m being totally impartial, he goes to New Hampshire, he’s living in New Hampshire. Living. Where’s Chris? Is Chris around? Right?!”
You may recall that Christie, before he dropped out of the 2016 race for the White House, had been accused of being an absentee governor because he was on the campaign trail so much. Yet, with Christie standing next to him, Trump slapped him silly, then did a non-apology by adding:
“I hated to do that, but I had to make my point.”
He hated to do it? Really? No, not at all. The small-fingered vulgarian we know as Donald J. Trump never hates to make fun of others when it serves his purposes or when he wants to elevate himself. He’s incredibly fond of using insults and one-liners to compensate for his own inadequacies, which are far too numerous to list.
And Christie, like a good little political eunuch, just plods along after his new master, even going so far as to miss the funeral of a New Jersey police officer killed in the line of duty so he could prove his fealty to Trump. Back home in New Jersey, that choice set off a firestorm of criticism, but what does Christie care? He’s a lame duck and has no political future unless he can manage to get a plum appointment with the current front-runner for the GOP nomination.
It will be doubly satisfying to watch Trump go down in flames, because it also means the end of Chris Christie.
