Michael Cohen is a friend of Donald Trump. He is considered a confidant. Cohen, a lawyer, is special counsel to Trump. He’s also Vice President of the Trump Organization.
He’s pretty much someone you’d assume would be in the Trump camp.
As reported in Politico, Cohen even served as a surrogate for Trump during a CNN discussion on Berman and Bolduan on Thursday. The anchors were asking Cohen about the upcoming New York primary and about the possibility of a contested convention in July.
“The establishment does not want Mr. Trump to be the nominee,” Cohen said.
John Berman then asked him about his thoughts on Reince Priebus, the chair of the Republican National Committee. Usually, said Berman, the nominee of the party gets to choose who is going to head the party committee. He asked Cohen to give his opinion. You know, should Donald keep Reince if he gets the nomination, or should he appoint someone else (maybe someone with a name that can be spoken with a straight face).
At first Cohen tried to sidestep the question, saying that the choice should be up to Trump, not him. But the CNN guys pressed him. Then this happened:
“Would you want Reince Priebus to remain Chairman of the RNC?”
“That’s up to Mr. Trump.”
“Yeah, but I’m asking you.”
“Me personally?”
There was a pause, then Cohen came out with the kicker.
“I’m actually a registered Democrat so I don’t really care about Reince Priebus.”
Berman and Bolduan reacted as if they’d been hit with a stun gun. They gasped, they interrupted each other, they were completely amazed. There was a certain element of “Wait, what?” on the air.
“You can’t vote?” Berman stuttered. “Can you vote?”
“So you’re not voting for Trump?” asked Bolduan at the same time.
“Not in the primary.”
OK. So let’s make that very clear. Donald Trump, the man with “many, many wonderful supporters, millions, they’re great, there are so many” is not getting the votes of either his children or his own special counsel.
