Out of the frying pan and into the fire. That seems to be the default position for presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump, who wanted desperately to put out the firestorm that has been roiling the Republican Party in the days since Trump began attacking a Hispanic federal judge overseeing the lawsuit against Trump University.
Last night, Trump tried desperately to make the “pivot” from primary candidate to Presidential contender. He used a written speech. He had a teleprompter. He was doing his best to pretend he isn’t a fire-breathing racist in the mold of George Wallace, and then this issued forth from his pie hole:
“We’re going to rebuild our inner cities, which are absolutely a shame and so sad. We’re going to take care of our African-American people that have been mistreated for so long.”
That comment, it should be recalled, comes just a week after Trump pointed out a black man in the audience at a rally being held in California and began shouting about:
“My African-American!”
There’s no way to tell if when Trump says such things he’s doing so because he feels he “owns” all black people, or if he just doesn’t understand how racially insensitive such remarks are. Either way, these are the kind of unforced errors that give campaign managers stomach ulcers.
What Trump said last night didn’t go unnoticed on social media, which immediately lit up with derision:

We're going to "take care of OUR African American people." Trump too stupid, too racist to know what he just said.

Trump: It's gonna be great. We are going to give "our African American people" 3/5 of a vote.

Did Trump say "our" African-American people? As in possessive?
No, that's not racist at all.

If the advisors to Donald Trump’s campaign want to assure that their candidate never says anything racist or objectionable again, they do have one solution: Buy lots of duct tape and apply liberally to Trump’s mouth.
In case you want to see it for yourself, here’s Trump talking about “our African-Americans” last night:
