GOP Lawmaker: Stopping Gun Sales To Terrorists Would Solve Nothing

The GOP just loves to pretend that what happened in Orlando, Florida, over the weekend has nothing to do with the fact that it’s incredibly easy for just about anyone to get whatever weapon of mass murder they desire, even if that person has a criminal record, is on a terrorist watch list, or is mentally unstable.

And the latest jackass Republican to try and hide his own cowardice in the face of the NRA is Alabama Congressman Robert Aderholt. Three weeks ago, Aderholt criticized a proposed amendment to a spending bill that would have prohibited gun sales to those listed on the federal terrorist watch list. Congressman Aderholt said it would only be a “superficial solution.” He then added that such a ban sounds reasonable, but:

“Like many liberal solutions, they are only skin deep.”

This obedient slave to the gun lobby–he received $2,500 from them when he ran for reelection in 2014–also argued:

“The reality is many people find themselves on the terrorist watch list by mistake. Something as simple as a mix up of a birth date can put someone on the list and the process to remove a name can take months or even years.”

Yesterday, rather than admitting it might be a good idea to revisit the issue of gun sales to a person who is on a terrorist watch list, Aderholt tried to blame the deaths of 50 people at the Pulse nightclub on President Obama and said no one should try to politicize the deaths of so many innocent people:

“I was sad to hear about the terrorist attacks in Orlando, on American soil. This and other attacks we have seen, prove that we do not have the luxury of debating the political correctness of ‘radical Islam.’ We need to focus on these and other terrorists and do whatever it takes to identify and hunt down those who would do us harm.”

Once again we see a clueless Republican daring to claim that if we would only use the “right words,” the problem of terrorism could be solved. As if words have more power than bullets ripping through flesh.

Congressman Aderholt, like many on the right in this country, is so beholden to the NRA that he cannot even comprehend that he too is partially to blame for what took place in that Orlando nightclub early Sunday morning. He is a paid shill for these merchants of death, and there is blood on his hands.
