A ridiculously backward Christian group in Maine, Equal Rights Not Special Rights, is campaigning to make homosexuality criminalized again.
Mike Heath and other heads of the Christian Civic League of Maine formed this group. They say that they are tired of being “forced” to accept homosexual lifestyles. Umm…no. If you don’t want to be gay, don’t be gay.
Heath said that the “war is on” and:
“There is conduct that ought to be punished, and Christianity teaches, has always taught and still does teach, that sodomy is such a behaviour.”
They are starting their campaign by trying to remove sexual orientation from the Maine Human Rights Act. This would make discrimination against the LGBT community legal. They believe that homosexuality should be put back in “the closet.” They are even against public displays of affection from same-sex couples. They are working to get this bigoted measure on the November ballot.
Legislation banning homosexual sexual behavior goes back centuries. In 1986, Justice Burgher wrote this about the case of Bowers v. Hardwick in 1986:
“…the proscriptions against sodomy have very ‘ancient roots.’ Decisions of individuals relating to homosexual conduct have been subject to state intervention throughout the history of Western civilization. Condemnation of those practices is firmly rooted in Judeao-Christian moral and ethical standards. Homosexual sodomy was a capital crime under Roman law….During the English Reformation when powers of the ecclesiastical courts were transferred to the King’s Courts, the first English statute criminalizing sodomy was passed. Blackstone described ‘the infamous crime against nature’ as an offense of ‘deeper malignity’ than rape, a heinous act ‘the very mention of which is a disgrace to human nature,’ and ‘a crime not fit to be named.” …To hold that the act of homosexual sodomy is somehow protected as a fundamental right would be to cast aside millennia of moral teaching.”
We don’t need to bring back this hate speech. Homosexuality is illegal in 77 countries. We really don’t need to make it illegal in ours again.
