If you’ve seen any of the surrogates or spokespeople for Donald Trump on television, then you know each and every one of them lies almost as much as the Orange Menace himself. And perhaps the most annoying and shrill of them all is Scottie Nell Hughes. But yesterday on CNN, Hughes was called out and humiliated on-air by CNN host Poppy Harlow.
The debate was about Trump’s recent “outreach” to African-American voters, and Harlow pointed out that in polling Trump doesn’t even do as well as third party candidates among blacks who are surveyed. Guest Bakari Sellers said that while Trump may pretend to be reaching out to blacks, his record proves who he really is:
“I know that many surrogates and many supporters of Donald Trump like to take the man away from his baggage, but you cannot sit here and not remember that Donald Trump is the one who supported the ‘Birther’ movement — and just yesterday in Philadelphia he refused to even apologize for it.”
Sellers is correct. Donald Trump is indeed the person who has most loudly questioned whether or not President Obama is an American citizen even though the President was clearly born in Hawaii.
Hughes then tried to paint Clinton as a racist, even though it’s Trump who is getting the support of former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke. Hughes asserted that the leader of the California KKK had endorsed Clinton. Of course, she neglected to say that he had done so as part of an attempt to harm Clinton. Hughes noted:
“Hillary Clinton has yet to disavow him, so there’s ties on both sides.”
Sellers countered by telling Hughes:
“Scottie and any other surrogate and Donald Trump himself are going to have an extremely hard time with this argument. I think they’re actually going down the wrong path that somehow Hillary Clinton is the bigot in this situation, or has some racist past or racist history, because that’s simply not the case.”
Then Hughes attempted to link Clinton to the birther movement and suggest that she was behind the inane attacks on the President’s birthplace. But Poppy Harlow would have none of it, shutting down the lying Hughes by telling her:
“Scottie, that is not factual. That is not factually correct. Hillary Clinton never questioned the birthplace of Barack Obama when she was running against him.”
Clearly, the default position for both Trump and his surrogates is to lie in every situation. When in doubt, they seem to believe, just start stacking the lies up. And yet they have the audacity to accuse others of doing what they engage in every single time they open their mouths.
