Here we go again.
The most bigoted, hateful, xenophobic American politician since Joseph McCarthy has an answer to the bombings in New York and New Jersey. The man who believes that he can single handedly end unemployment, defeat ISIS and cure the common cold has a simple remedy.
After this weekend’s double bombings in New Jersey and New York City, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump told his good buddies on Fox News that he knows just what to do.
Talking Points Memo reports that Trump said it’s time for law enforcement in the U.S to start profiling people “from that part of the world.” In typical Trumpspeak, he failed to provide any details about his plan.
For example, he neglected to say exactly what “part of the world” he was referencing. Iraq? Afghanistan? The entire Middle East? What about Africa, since there are terrorists from Somalia and Nigeria? The Boston Marathon bombers came from the former Soviet Union. What are the boundaries for “that part of the world?”
Oh, and will we be “profiling” Christians or Jews from that part of the world? Just asking.
He didn’t specify what he meant by profiling, either. Could he have meant tracking and monitoring every single person from “that part of the world?” Or was he thinking of watching what people from “that part of the world” buy and arresting them for buying cell phones or pressure cookers? No one knows.
A close look at Trump’s actual words helps us to understand. Not to understand what the hell he has planned, but to understand just how confused and disorganized his thinking is. In the interview, Trump said:
“Israel has done an unbelievable job and they will profile. They profile. They see somebody that’s suspicious. They will profile. They will take that person in and check out. Do we have a choice? Look what’s going on. Do we really have a choice? We’re trying to be so politically correct in our country and this is only going to get worse.”
So, um, how exactly does Israel profile? What does he mean by “an unbelievable job?” There are definitely still terrorist strikes in Israel. Does Trump think that American law enforcement fails to check out people who behave suspiciously? Where does he get that information?
This is not the first time that Donald Trump has called for “profiling” as a way to end terrorism. Last June, after the massacre at the Orlando nightclub, Trump said that it was time to start profiling people. Again, he left out any details about what that meant, or exactly who he’d “profile.”
Ironically, the killer in the Orlando attack was born in the United States. So profiling people “from that part of the world” wouldn’t have caught him.
Not unless we look at what Mr. Trump really means, which is “we need to get rid of all the Muslims.”
Donald Trump is a liar, a bigot, and an empty headed fool. He reminds me of something my fifth grade teacher used to say when kids were talking in class. She’d say, “Empty barrels make the most noise.”
