The election of Donald Trump has sparked a wave of bullying and hate crimes across the country, as racists, bigots, xenophobes, homophobes, and hate mongers of all stripes feel empowered. His ascension to the highest office, given his history, has emboldened people who now think, “If my president can do it, then why can’t I?” He ran a campaign full of hateful rhetoric, and his supporters took him at his word. And now, we see the fruits of those words. The KKK is planning a victory march. The League of the South is delighted. And racists are blowing up Twitter.

The reports of hate crimes are coming in from across the nation. You may even know someone who has been harmed. I’ve included some of these more personal stories in this article as well – not just the ones getting national attention.

As of this writing, Trump has been silent on these attacks. His supporters are attempting to explain them away saying things like “It’s because Obama divided us,” “They’re just ignorant people,” and “These types of things have always happened.”

The defensiveness of such statements speaks volumes to me.

The other day, someone I love wrote:

“What’s interesting to me is how the right has consistently told us how racism was a relic of the past and we no longer need protections like the Voters Rights Act or Affirmative Action. Now we’re being told these things have ‘happened all the time’ and don’t have anything to do with Donald Trump. Hmm.”

And she’s exactly right.

Below is a list of some of the attacks we’ve heard about since Trump’s election. And it hasn’t even been one week since the election.

This is by no means an all-inclusive list.

Napa Valley, California

A young Asian woman was pumping gas when a man approached her and said, “We won. Now get the fuck out of my country.”

A female Muslim student was assaulted by two males who, according to police, made pro-Trump statements before stealing her backpack, keys, and car.

This one came to me personally from a friend. A young Black woman who currently serves in our Navy found this note on her car on Thursday, November 10.

A woman on the BART train told another woman that “Trump might deport you” and called her a stalker.

Shasta High School, California

A student came to school and handed out “deportation” letters to non-white students the day after Trump was elected.

A Latina woman dropped her child off at school, only to find a group of 5th graders chanting “Build a wall!”

A message of unity and love was defaced with “Trump 2016.”

A Black woman was pumping gas and overheard men talking about the election and how they’re happy they will no longer have to deal with “n****rs.” One approached the woman and said:

“How scared are you, you black bitch? I should just kill you now. You’re a waste of air.”

Brooksville, Florida

A truck is driving around with “All Muslims Are Terrorists,” “I Hate Muslims,” and “Deport Them All.” The truck also flies two large Trump flags.

Students found signs had been put up over water fountains reading “whites only” and “colored.”

Chicago, Illinois

Warren Township High School, Illinois

“Whites Only” was found written on a bathroom stall door the day after Trump’s election.

Bloomington, Indiana

A Black woman crossing the street was approached by White men in a truck, who said:

“Fuck you n****r bitch. Trump is going to deport you back to Africa.”

Turner Middle School, Kansas

An eighth grade student was reportedly pelted with food and told he was going to be deported. His mother says that just days before, he considered the kids his friends.

Westland Middle School, Maryland

Teachers sent a letter home to parents informing them that swastikas had appeared in one of the bathrooms, formed with ink, pencils, and glue sticks.

Cambridge, Massachusetts

A Fellow in Department of Systems Biology at Harvard Medical School posted a letter on Twitter regarding an incident he witnessed in which a postal worker told another man:

“Go back to your country. This is Trump land. You ain’t getting your check no more.”

Easthampton, Massachusetts

Mount Tom was defaced with graffiti reading “gas the Jews,” “fuck all n*****rs,” and “Trump 2016” alongside swastikas.

Wellesley College, Massachusetts

Two young men drove around the campus of Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s alma mater, shouting racist comments, “Make America great again,” and flying a Trump flag. They also spit on a young Black woman.

Detroit, Michigan

A man posted (and then later deleted) a picture of President Obama hanging from a noose and wrote:

“Congratulations to all that supported TRUMP. You my friends are winners. Now lets [sic] get to work and hang these traitors. Starting at the top? Public hangings in order. Start with this guy IslamaObama.”

DeWitt Junior High School, Michigan

Students locked arms to form a “wall” to block Latino students. The students invoked Trump’s name and said their fellow students “need to go back to Mexico.”

Royal Oak Middle School, Michigan

Students chanted “Build that wall!” in the cafeteria while Latino students cried.

Maple Grove High School, Minnesota

Students were greeted Wednesday morning with “Fuck n****rs,” “#fuckallporchmonkeys,” “#whitesonly,“#whiteamerica,” and, of course “Trump” scrawled on a restroom door.

Maplewood, Missouri

A woman was leaving a Shop ‘n’ Save store when a man approached her and grabbed her between the legs, then ran away while yelling:

“Courtesy of President Trump.”

St. Charles, Missouri

Maria Sanchez found a makeshift “wall” in her dorm room, along with a nasty note about Trump’s victory.

Bloomfield, New Jersey

A pastor posted a photo of a letter that was left on a colleague’s car, which read:

“So, father homo – How does it feel to have Trump as your president? At least he’s got a set of balls. They’ll put marriage back where God wants it and take yours away. America’s gonna take care of your faggity [sic] ass.”

Trump-supporting students shouted “10 feet higher!” at Latino students at a high school.

New York University, New York

“Trump!” was spray painted on the door of the Muslim prayer room.

Rochester, New York

Two separate incidents of gay pride flags being burned Tuesday night were reported to Rochester police.

St. Francis Prep School, New York

A group of Black students got on the bus and were told to go to the back, because “Trump is president.”

The words “ISIS is calling,” “Muslims can leave,” “Fuck stupid Latino immigrants,” “Fuck n****rs,” and “Trump Trump” appeared in a women’s bathroom.

A softball dugout was spray painted with a swastika and the words “Make America white again.”

Durham, North Carolina

Graffiti sprayed on a wall read:

“Black Lives Don’t Matter And Neither Does Your Votes”

Elon University, North Carolina

A message reading “Hasta la vista Latinos” was found written on a whiteboard in Kivette Hall on campus. The student responsible has since come forward and apologized.

King, North Carolina

A veteran holding a “Veterans Against Trump” sign was outside the American Legion when:

“Four members of the Legion Color Guard drove past him and one of the trucks sped up, hit him, and then left the scene.”

North Carolina

Sign placed on a car reads:

“Can’t wait until your ‘marriage’ is overturned by a real president. Gay families = burn in hell. #Trump2016 #Repent #Godbless”

Swastikas, including one with the swastika replacing the “T” in “Trump,” along with “Sieg Heil 2016” were spray painted on storefronts. Many reports of pro-Trump and pro-Nazi graffiti was reported on Wednesday.

University of Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania

Every Black freshman on campus was added to a GroupMe group called “N****r Lynching”

Crossville, Tennessee

Ashley Wideman found her car sprayed with “N****r lover,” “Get out,” “Bitch,” and a swastika with the words “2 weeks” below it.

Knoxville, Tennessee

A Black man left his house on Wednesday and found the words “Fuck you n*****r” and “Trump” written on his car.

A screed was posted on the UVU campus, stating that all the liberals better “shut the fuck up”

John Kraus found his car vandalized, painted with “Faggot!” “Go 2 Hell!” and “Fag!”

UW-La Crosse, Wisconsin

Four Black students found the words “Go Home N*****r” on their door on Wednesday morning.
