It’s a joyous time to be an American Republican. For the first time since 2001, the GOP controls both houses of Congress and the White House. Republicans must be deliriously happy. But as it turns out, that’s not true.
Former Clinton Labor Secretary Robert Reich posted what he says is a conversation he recently had with a Republican operative and former Congressman. In it, Reich asked how the party feels about Trump. His GOP friend told him the Republicans will go along with Trump for now, but are already preparing to dump him and coronate Mike Pence.
Reich specifically asked his friend: What will the GOP do now that Trump is in the Oval Office? The friend replied:
“They’ll play along for a while. They’ll get as much as they want – tax cuts galore, deregulation, military buildup, slash all those poverty programs, and then get to work on Social Security and Medicare – and blame him. And he’s such a fool he’ll want to take credit for everything.”
Then what happens? That’s when the GOP operative revealed what waits in the wings:
“Pence is their guy. They all think Trump is out of his mind. So the moment Trump does something really dumb – steps over the line – violates the law in a big stupid clumsy way…and you know he will …”
Reich completed the sentence for this Republican friend:
“They impeach him.”
His friend’s reply:
“You bet. They pull the trigger.”
Trump will, as Reich’s friend suggested, manage to screw up big time and cause a major Constitutional crisis which could well lead to him being impeached. See, the GOP isn’t afraid of what comes after Trump. They see Pence as the real conservative, a man who is almost as extreme as the far right zealots who are in the key Congressional leadership positions. Trump is expendable, unstable, and unpredictable. They won’t hesitate to toss him overboard and make Pence the captain of their ship.
So for the Trump acolytes who say there’s no way in hell Trump will ever be impeached, it’s time you faced facts: The plans are already being drawn up. Trump is all but done, and he just got into office.
