Donald Trump did not get a mandate, and therefore did not deserve a honeymoon. The latest evidence that he isn’t getting one started rolling in on Tuesday night. A number of Trump’s most loyal supporters had a brainstrorm–why not have his supporters use the hashtag “#ThankYouTrump” to thank Trump for how far he’s already gone in making America great again? Well, so far it’s backfired in lovely fashion. Trump’s many opponents have used it as a convenient way to mock and pillory the Donald.

The call to action started lighting up Trumpistas’ phones sometime on Monday morning.

Believe it or not, this was not a White House production–at least, as near as can be determined. Granted, it may have sounded a lot like Trump’s self-aggrandizing “Thank You Tour” after the election. But in the absence of something we haven’t heard or seen, it looks like the message was received in red America when Trump declared the day of his inauguration to be a “National Day of Patriotic Devotion.” What better way to show your patriotic devotion by publicly thanking the Dear Leader?

It started out as planned.

At least one Twitter user even went as far as to change his display name out of patriotic devotion to the Donald.

When weight-loss guru and Trump critic Tony Posnanski spotted it, he decided to express his gratitude to Trump. Well, sorta.

From that point onward, this attempt at pro-Trump astroturfing went sideways–bigly.

By Wednesday morning, “#ThankYouTrump” was the highest-trending hashtag on Twitter. From the looks of it, most of the tweets came from people slamming him. However, Trump’s raft of immigration executive orders om Wednesday gave the Trumpistas a chance to close the gap.

But so far, the pushback from the reality-based world is still well underway.

Oh, this is just lovely to watch. More proof that Trump is uniting the people–against him.

We already knew that the right is still playing catch-up in social media. But this episode proves just how big the gap still is.
