Earlier this week, Public Policy Polling released a new national poll that revealed the stark gulf between diehard supporters of Donald Trump and the country at large. For instance, only 45 percent of Trump voters believe that Donald Trump Jr. actually held a meeting in Trump Tower in hopes of getting Russian-flavored “opposition research” about Hillary Clinton–even though Donald Jr. himself admitted the meeting took place. Moreover, even in the face of overwhelming evidence that Russia had a thumb on the scale in favor of Trump, a whopping 77 percent of Trump voters believe the Russia story is fake news.
Now how is this possible? Well, one factor in this yuuuuge gulf may be the religious right. For the better part of six months, the nation’s self-proclaimed moral guardians have convinced their followers that the opposition to Trump is driven by witchcraft, demons, and the devil himself. We got a reminder of this on Thursday, when one of Trump’s loudest fundie cheerleaders urged his followers to join him in waging spiritual warfare against the forces opposing Trump.
Among the fundies who have been beating the drum for the Donald, Lance Wallnau is in a class by himself. He maintains that the opposition to Trump is driven by the same spirit as witchcraft because it seeks to “control and intimidate, manipulate.” To hear him talk, the media has been using witchcraft to turn us against Trump, and those who oppose the Donald actually oppose God himself. For good measure, he claims that any attempt to push out Trump is nothing less than sabotage.
Wallnau drove the point home further on Thursday in a message to his Facebook followers urging them to join him in prayer for Trump and his family. People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch got a clip.
While on vacation in Aruba, Wallnau told his followers about the “attacks” that Trump’s family–including “poor Donald Jr.”–by the “vicious machine” opposed to him. He claimed that Trump was watching his kids get “torn apart” by the Resistance.
From where Wallnau was sitting, the attacks on Trump’s family made no sense, especially considering Trump had given up his business career to “go save the nation.” He argued that Trump needs his family by his side in the face of his “stinkin’ ideological enemies” bombarding him day and night.
Later, Wallnau claimed that witches were releasing “tens of thousands of curses” against Trump. He believes that those praying for Trump need to pray for his family as well, since “all those witchcraft curses” originally intended for Trump are affecting Donald Jr., Eric, and Ivanka. He remembered how one of his mentors, Derek Prince, cast a demon out of someone–only to have that demon enter the family dog. Under that demon’s influence, the dog jumped out of the family car to his death. Prince took it as a sign that when we pray for someone, we need to pray for the family as well.
To that end, Wallnau launched into a warfare prayer for the entire Trump family.
“In the name of Jesus, we take authority together over every hex, vex, spell, jinx, satanic curse, blood curse, every demon assigned to destroy the health of the president, to destroy the health of his family, to harass him and vex him, to cause him to lose sleep. In Jesus’ name, we veto every curse that has been brought against Donald Trump and his family and his administration!”
After asking for “the blood of Jesus” to cover Trump’s kids, from Donald Jr. on down, as well as Melania, he told every demon attacking Trump, “You will not harass, you have no permission to touch his family.” He also asked that “the sources of these things” be either broken up or converted.
Some of the comments from Wallnau’s followers offer a staggering insight into the mentality behind Trump’s fundie supporters.

As a charismatic/Pentecostal liberal Democrat, this sort of talk makes me shudder. So Trump isn’t tanking because of mounting evidence that Trump campaign operatives really did collude with the Kremlin. It’s not because of his staggering disrespect for the Constitution and for any opposition. No, no–it’s because the devil is attacking him, and making people speak out against God’s “anointed” president.
Apparently Wallnau doesn’t know, doesn’t understand, or refuses to understand that there are people praying for the truth to be exposed, and for all those responsible for this appalling situation–from Trump on down–be held to account. I’m one of them.
Here’s a news flash, Lance. The way things are going, it’s only a matter of time before Trump falls. And when he does fall, you and others who have bullied people into backing him will have to answer for it.
