Recently, Pope Francis gave an exclusive interview to Father Antonio Spardaro, editor and chief of the Italian journal,?La Civilt? Cattolica.?In the interview, Pope Francis, 76, states:
“A person once asked me, in a provocative manner, if I approved of homosexuality. I replied with another question: ?Tell me: when God looks at a gay person, does he endorse the existence of this person with love, or reject and condemn this person?? We must always consider the person. Here we enter into the mystery of the human being. In life, God accompanies persons, and we must accompany them, starting from their situation. It is necessary to accompany them with mercy. When that happens, the Holy Spirit inspires the priest to say the right thing.”
The new pope continued:
?We have to find a new balance. Otherwise even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, losing the freshness and fragrance of the gospel.?
Pope Francis has been very vocal on many controversial issues over the last few months. Most feel he is a refreshing change for the Catholic Church, and the church’s traditional political dogma. Some have gone so far as to call the new pope a Liberal. He is growing in popularity by the day. One prominent pro-choice ?(NARAL) publicly thank the pope. Others who are atheist an lgbt have admitted in many comment threads to being pleased with some of what Pope Francis has to say.
Being that Pope Francis has not stated he is pro-choice or pro-equal marriage, he has a ways to go before he can become the Liberal that some claim him to be. Nonetheless, he is a breath of fresh air that will surely attract many folks back to the church.
